DescriptionThe grade 2 listed St Albans South signal box, dating from 1892, has been restored as part of our railway and architectural heritage by the St Albans Signal Box Preservation Trust, a registered charity. The restoration has won local and national awards.

The box is open to the public on the second and fourth Sunday afternoons of each month from April-October inclusive and on the second Sunday of the month November-March, from 2-5pm. Other special extended open days are listed on our website.

ENTRY IS FREE - but donations are always welcome towards the upkeep of the building!

We are the largest preserved Midland Railway signal box in the country, and the only one in it's original working position next to a still-busy main line.

Attractions include working signals in the garden, signalling demonstrations on the 1st floor of the box, a museum of signalling and railway-related items on the ground floor, audio-visual displays of the box in use in the 1970s and of the restoration. Light refreshments available.

There is wheelchair access through the garden and into the ground floor of the box, but the first floor can only be accessed via an external staircase.

Membership of the Trust - see the website for details.
