Eastenders star to unveil new playground facility for disabled Redbourn youngsters...

(26th June 2012)

Actor, Derek Martin (‘Charlie Slater’ in BBC’s Eastenders) will join Joan Morecambe, wife of comedy legend Eric Morecambe, in Redbourn, Hertfordshire tomorrow (Wednesday 27 June) to officially open a new playground facility at St Lukes School. Media are invited to attend for photography, filming and interview opportunities at 12.45pm.

St Luke’s School caters for 153 young people with complex learning difficulties, including those with autistic spectrum disorders and social communication difficulties. St Luke’s is a specialist Science and Humanities College that aims to create a happy and safe learning environment for its pupils.

The new playground equipment from The Lord’s Taverners, costing £17,600, has been made possible thanks to support from The Hearn Foundation. The equipment will enable the St Luke’s pupils to have fun while increasing their fitness levels, strength and well-being. It has been proven that short bursts of activity can also help improve focus and concentration in the classroom.

Matthew Patten, chief executive of The Lord’s Taverners, said, “The Lord’s Taverners believes that sport and recreation is essential for all young people, regardless of ability. This new playground equipment will enable the St Luke’s pupils to enjoy new experiences in the pool and enhance their learning. We are delighted to be able to support the staff, parents and pupils of St Luke’s School, and thank The Hearn Foundation for helping us give even more disabled youngsters a sporting chance.”

The Lord’s Taverners, the official charity of recreational cricket and one of the UK’s leading youth sports and disability charities, will donate over £3 million this year to help give young people, particularly those with special needs, a sporting chance.
