Watford at the Herts Youth Games...
(11th July 2012)
Hundreds of young people from Watford had an opportunity to cheer the Olympic torch relay at the Herts Youth Games held on Sunday 8 July.
All competitors stopped play to line up and see the torch pass through the event held at Hatfield Sports Village.
Over a thousand young people aged from eight to sixteen flocked to the Hertfordshire Sports Village from across the county to compete in 14 events.
Representing their Districts and Boroughs and wearing distinctive team colours athletes competed in aquathlon (swimming and running), badminton, girls cricket, girls football, basketball, table tennis, netball, hockey, bowls, fencing and sports hall athletics.
Rain might have tried to stop play but the smiles shone through. Outside, competitors had to dodge the heavy but fortunately intermittent showers which failed to curb either their enthusiasm or competitiveness.
Indoor sports were no less keenly fought with many event winners being decided by the final match. Distinctive in their bright yellow t-shirts, Team Watford enjoyed a great day of competition winning medals across a variety of sports.
Caroline Roche, Sports Development Officer for Watford Borough Council said: "I am delighted with Watford's result and would like to say a big thank you to all the team managers, volunteers and athletes for their hard work and commitment in the lead up to the Herts Youth Games and for making Watford proud."
