Concerts to mark finale of summer holidays...

(22nd August 2012)

Hertfordshire County Council’s Music Service has arranged two concerts featuring a rousing programme of music to close the school summer holidays.

The concerts will see the Hertfordshire Schools' Symphony Orchestra performing in Hertford on 1 September and the Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra in Watford on 2 September.

Hertfordshire Schools' Symphony Orchestra will perform at the Hertford Theatre, in The Wash, at 7.30pm on Saturday 1 September. Their invigorating programme, conducted by John Brennan, includes Vaughan Williams’s The Lark Ascending, as well as Tchaikovsky's 5th Symphony.

Tickets cost between £15 and £12 for adults, £10 for concessions and £5 for children. Call 01727 860941 and select option two for the box office.

The Hertfordshire County Youth Orchestra, conducted by Peter Stark, will perform Mahler’s Symphony No.6 at Watford Colosseum, on Rickmansworth Road, at 7pm on Sunday 2 September.

This ambitious and rarely performed piece features a vast orchestra including two sets of timpani drums, cowbells and a great hammer. Tickets cost between £18 and £12 for adults, £15 and £10 for concessions and £5 for children. Call 01727 860941 and select option two for the box office.

Frances Button, Cabinet Member for Education, said: “These concerts showcase two Hertfordshire ensembles that are among the country’s finest youth orchestras and this is a great opportunity for you to enjoy them perform.”

Hertfordshire County Council's Music Service runs eight County Youth Music groups who meet three times a year for intensive courses culminating in performances at prestigious venues such as the Royal Academy of Music, Watford Colosseum, Central Hall in Westminster, the Royal Albert Hall, and the Cathedral and Abbey Church of St Alban.

These courses are led by teams of professional conductors and sectional coaches from within the Hertfordshire Music Service and today's top orchestras. Projects include professional quality recordings, international tours, opportunities to perform concertos, premieres of new works and collaborative projects with other groups.
