Exhibition of Olympic art in Welwyn Garden City... (22nd August 2012)
Winning entrees to an Olympics-inspired art competition for members of
disability art groups and special school pupils are now on display at Campus West in Welwyn Garden City.
The competition, from the Studio to the Podium, was devised by Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners and has been awarded a London 2012 Inspire Mark. Entrants include sculptors, potters, painters and photographers, all inspired by the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games to enter.
The pieces submitted were of a very high standard for both the over 18 and the under 18 categories. The winners of the competition went to an exclusive preview of the exhibition last week.
The winners of the over 18 category were Wellstones who entered an Olympic ceramic pot. St Elizabeth’s Centre came highly commended with ‘Olympic Buttons’ and Mill Green art group were commended for their ceramic plaque.
The under 18 category was won by Falconer School who submitted a mosaic, Oaklands College were highly commended for their ceramic tiles and Lakeside School were commended for their entry of an Olympic Torch and t-shirt.
First prize is £500 worth of art equipment for the winner’s school or group; highly
commended entries win £250 worth of art equipment and commended £100.
Michael McGrath, Paralympic and disability sports representative to the Hertfordshire is Ready for Winners Board, said: “From the Studio to the Podium has been a fantastic opportunity for budding disabled artists in Hertfordshire who are inspired by the Games.
“This competition reflects the Paralympic values of courage, inspiration, determination and equality. Those who have their work exhibited can feel really proud that they were part of a huge festival as the UK comes together to celebrate the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games Cultural Olympiad.”
