Broxbourne Takes Third Place at Hertfordshire Youth Games

(15th May 2003)

The Borough of Broxbourne team won third overall place at the tenth annual BAA Stansted Hertfordshire Youth Games, which was held at Gosling Sports Park and Stanborough School on Sunday 11th May. This result is an improvement on last year, when Team Broxbourne took fourth place.

Broxbourne achieved notable success in the individual events, winning the under 9 tennis and finishing second in the under 15 mixed table tennis. The under 15 girls hockey team narrowly missed out on the top spot on penalties. There were also third places for the under 11 mixed athletics squad, the under 15 and under 13 netball teams, and in the under 13 tennis event.

The young athletes that represented Broxbourne were a credit to both themselves and the Borough. The athletes displayed great sporting skills and excellent sportsmanship throughout the day. Broxbourne Council would like to congratulate all those athletes and team managers that took part in this year’s games and thank them for all their hard work and support.

BAA Stansted Hertfordshire Youth Games is a one-day multi sport competition for young sports people aged between seven to fifteen years. Nine districts and boroughs of Hertfordshire worked co-operatively to stage the event, which promotes and encourages sports development principles.

Approximately 1500 young athletes competed in 19 different events on the day and special guests were England, British Lions and Saracens Rugby Union Scrum Half Kyran Bracken and UK athlete, 400m runner Mark Richardson. Both were on hand to sign autographs and attend the presentation ceremony. The team from East Herts won the overall event for the third consecutive year.
