Council Helping To Nurture Future Sporting Stars

Since 1st April 2003 48 elite young sports people from the Borough of Broxbourne have benefited from 'Broxbourne Council’s Opportunity for Excellence award. The award consists of either a £250 grant or a £120 grant plus a student gold card at Grundy Park Leisure Centre or the John Warner Sports Centre. It is designed to help young sports people achieve their potential by contributing towards their training, equipment, and competition costs.

The Opportunity for Excellence scheme is for local athletes aged between 11 and 19. Priority is given to applicants that compete at international then national and finally county representative level in their chosen sport. Young athletes that have received awards include:

• an international basketball player

• an international swimmer

• a kayaker

• national and county netballers

• tennis players

• athletes

• gymnasts

• cricketers

• swimmers

From 1st April 2004 budding young sports persons can apply for the new round of awards by contacting Broxbourne Council on 01992 785546 or by visiting EASY, the dedicated youth section of Broxbourne Council's website - www.broxbourne.gov.uk/easy/default.htm

Broxbourne Council also run a FANS Scheme which aims to help national sportspeople of all ages who compete at national level. To be eligible for the scheme residents must be a current national sportsperson from any Sport England recognised sport (at any age group). National is deemed as either being a member of a national team/squad or being ranked in the top 10.

Successful applicants are given a 12 month Gold Card that provides unlimited use of swimming pool, gym and exercise classes (subject to facility programmes and terms and conditions). More information and application forms are available from Broxbourne Borough Council on 01992 785555 ext 5909.
