Brains and beauty is top in Hertfordshire...

(15th May 2008)

Students at the University of Hertfordshire are topping the league with beauty as well as brains following a surge of success in beauty contests and competitions this year.

Radiography student Lisa Lazarus has just won Miss Universe UK 2008 the first round of the Miss Universe competition - one of the longest standing beauty pageants in the world and owned by Donald Trump.

Lisa Lazarus says: “I have just finished an exam today so I am making sure that I keep up with my studies as well as all the work involved in the competition. I have just done an interview for Radiography magazine about my new title so I’m managing to mix both passions well.”

This week, three University of Hertfordshire students battled for the title of Miss Hertfordshire UK 2008 which is a regional heat for the coveted title of Miss UK. Dominique Thompson a Psychology student, Ela Good, a Computer Science student and Jennifer Charles studying Performing Arts were among the 30 finalists of Miss Hertfordshire UK. Student, Jennifer Charles who travels to the University from Leicester won Miss Eco - one of the new titles recently launched for the event.

Two recent graduates from the University have also been recognised for their beautiful qualities for top TV reality programmes. Lisa-Jane Fowler, a recent Psychology graduate is one of 14 models across the country to appear in the latest TV series of Britain’s Next Top Model.

And the men have not been left out in the Beauty stakes. A Science and Philosophy Graduate Matthew Iovane, features in the current hit reality television programme Shipwrecked and having recently returned from the Island, he has a number of modelling contacts already lined up.

Hertfordshire as a county is well-known for its beauty success stories. Those celebrities born and bred in the area include Victoria Beckham, young Actor Will Kemp and Strictly Come Dancing stars Aleisha Dixon and Mark Ramparkash.
