Broxbourne has lowest Council Tax in England
(12th April 2002)
The total council tax level in Broxbourne, including the County Council's tax, is the lowest of all the 238 English Shire District Councils in England, according to figures supplied by the Department of Transport and the Local Regions (DTLR).
Broxbourne Council's element of the 2002/2003 Band D tax was set at £79.26, compared to the 2001/2002 level of £75.49. The overall charge for Band D (including the police and Hertfordshire County Council) was set at £879 (£804.22 in 2001 /2002). This charge is the lowest in the country, an improvement on last year where it stood at 3rd lowest. Broxbourne continues to have the cheapest council tax in Hertfordshire, with the overall charge being around £33 cheaper than the next lowest charge at Band D level. Broxbourne is the only Hertfordshire district in which the council's levy is less than that of the constabulary.
The council's focus on delivering value for money is also reflected in an emphasis on the provision of quality services. Broxbourne holds 17 Charter Marks, awarded by the government in recognition of service excellence - more than any other Hertfordshire authority and one of the highest achievements in the country. The council also holds a number of quality awards including ISO and Investor in People and has received two star recognition from the audit commission for each of the last three services to be considered under the Best Value regime.
Broxbourne Council now collects nearly half of its council tax by direct debit and is continuing to give direct debit payers the option of paying over ten or twelve months. Direct debit payers are also given a choice of payment dates of the 1st or the 15th of the month with the addition of the 25th of the month from 1st April 2002. This extra flexibility is designed to allow residents to select a payment date convenient to their own pay day.
Anyone wishing to receive a direct debit mandate should contact their local One Stop Shop, or telephone the Council on 01992 785585, or e-mail: email@example.com. Further information on council tax banding and charges can be found on the council's web site at www.broxbourne.gov.uk
