This small village is about 2 miles away from Abbots Langley and is the birthplace of Nicholas Breakspear, the only Englishman ever to be pope. He was born at Bedmond Farm in 1100 AD and grew up in the farms and villages around Bedmond in the 12th century. His father, Robert Breakspear, was a monk at St Albans Abbey. However, when Nicholas attempted to follow in his fathers footsteps and become a monk at the abbey, his admission was refused. So he travelled to Europe and became a monk in France. In 1154 he was appointed Pope Adrian IV. He died 5 years later in 1159.
