Royston is situated on the Hertfordshire/Cambridgeshire border in the north-east corner of Hertfordshire. The town is surrounded by countryside with nearby towns including Baldock (9 miles south west), Letchworth (10 miles south west), Cambridge (12 miles north east) and Hertford (18 miles south).
Royston is situated where two Roman roads met, the Icknield Way and Ermine Street. The town is named after the Wayside Cross erected by Lady Roysia. The town was a favourite hunting base for King James 1 who built a hunting lodge in the town.
Today, Royston is a small market town with light industry providing employment.
Royston has a good selection of restaurants and pubs along with a cinema, the Priory Royston.
Royston Museum presents the history of the town. Also worth visiting is the unique Royston Cave which is thought to have been used by the Knights Templar in the 13th century. You can also visit the stately home, Wimpole Hall, which is about 6 miles from Royston.
