Townsend is a district of St Albans situated about 0.5 miles north of the city centre. The boundaries of Townsend are approximately marked by Batchwood Drive and Folly Lane / Church Street. North of Townsend is the district of New Greens while to the east are Bernards Heath and Marshalswick.
The area largely consists of residential property, schools and sports facilities. The housing is a mixture of Victorian terraced cottages, post-war estates and new housing developments. New houses are still being built in the district.
Excluding the city centre, the nearest pub and restaurant is The Harvester (formerly The Ancient Briton), that stands on the crossroads of Harpenden Road, Batchwood Drive and Beech Road. Opposite the pub, a shop sells newspapers, food and other items.
Nearby sporting facilities include tennis (Townsend Tennis Club) and bowls (St Albans Townsend Bowling Club). Just off Batchwood Drive is Batchwood Golf Course, an 18 hole course. Facilities at Batchwood Golf & Tennis Club include indoor and outdoor tennis courts, squash courts, gym and other leisure activities.
One of St Albans' nightclubs, Batchwood Hall is situated near the golf course and leisure complex.
There are a number of nursery, primary and secondary schools in or near to Townsend.
