The area of St Albans known as Bernards Heath is situated just north of the city centre, with Townsend to the west and Marshalswick to the east.
Bernards Heath takes its name from the area of open ground that has a very historic past. The second battle of St Albans took place at Bernards Heath in 1466 and it was here that hand guns were used in battle for the first time. Local residents are now fighting their own battle, to preserve the heath from housing and other developments. For more information, see the web site of Bernards Heath Village Green Preservation Society at www.bernardsheath.org
There are a number of schools in Bernards Heath including Spencer School and Bernards Heath Infants School.
