This little village is sometimes thought of as North Mymms - North Mymms Park is situated about 1 south-west of the village.
It was at Welham Green in 1784 that the first ever balloon flight over England came to temporarily halt. The pilot, Vincenzo Lunardi, paused his journey to let his sick cat get off. The place that he stopped in Welham Green has been called "Balloon Corner" since then. He then continued his journey to Colliers End.
